Water Crisis in Pakistan
Despite being a basic necessity for survival, regular and unhindered access to clean water remains a privilege afforded by only 60% of Pakistanis. The rest of the 40% struggle on a daily basis to meet their basic needs related to sanitation, livelihoods and nutrition in the scarcity, or at times total absence, of an essential resource like water.

This scarcity creates disastrous circumstances where the health of entire communities is endangered, to the point where 40% of all deaths in Pakistan are caused by water contamination. The loss of health and life are just two aspects of the Ummah’s water crisis in Pakistan, the lack of this vital resource destabilizes the lives and  livelihoods of vulnerable members of the agricultural industry like farmers and their families. This issue has a negative domino effect on the already disenfranchised and marginalized segments of the Ummah.

UCI’s Work to Ease the Crisis:
With your Zakat and Sadiqa, we, at Ummah Charity International have worked in rural areas across Pakistan to improve the lives of vulnerable communities by installing fresh water sources of wells and hand pumps that provide water to over 200,000 people. Giving your Zakat to UCI not only allows you to fulfil your religious duty, but also helps our Ummah overcome the cycle of poverty and build a sustainable future. And, as much as your Zakat contributes to their future, it also contributes to your own protection in the Hereafter.

Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace, said: “The believer’s shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity.” (Al-Tirmidhi)

Covid-19’s Effect on the Crisis:

With the Covid-19 virus spreading across the world, water scarcity is more pressing issues than ever. To people in vulnerable areas of Pakistan, struggling to get enough water to consumption, repeated washing hands for disease prevention seems like an unaffordable luxury. Your donation at this crucial time can help save lives of many from contaminated water and from this global pandemic.

How Do We Help?
At Ummah Charity International, we have worked in over 20 areas across Pakistan to relieve the burden of water scarcity through our Muslim ummah. With the help of your Zakat and Sadaqah donations, more than 150,000 people have benefited from the water wells and hand water pumps that were installed along with the provision of water tankers and bottles of safe drinking water in vulnerable communities.

Giving Zakat with UCI not only allows you to fulfil your religious duty, but also helps our ummah overcome the cycle of poverty and build a sustainable future. And, as much as your Zakat contributes to their future, it also contributes to your own protection in the Hereafter.

These people, belonging to impoverished families with not much to live on have found hope through our Water for Life Project. So, will you help us spread the hope and make a water well donation?

Some of the districts we worked in are:

Kashmore, Ghambat, Bakshapur, Gudhpur, Kot Sabzal, Ranipur, Moro, Dadu, Ghotki, Mir Pur Mathelo

‘The Messenger of Allah (saw) was asked, “Which charity is best?” He replied, “[Providing] water”.’ [Abu Dawud]
Water as Sadaqah Jariyah
‘When a person dies, his deeds come to an end, except for three: ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), knowledge that is benefited from, and a righteous child who prays for him.’ [Sahih Muslim]

Helping the construction of fresh water sources like wells and hand pumps is a form of Sadqah e Jariyah, which means it is an act or donation you do once but are rewarded every time anyone benefits from it. This form of Sadqah extends to the afterlife and through generations, that is, you and your descendants keep earning rewards even after you have transcended to your immaterial eternal life.

Among the varied acts of Sadaqah Jariyah, there is one that surpasses all – giving water is sacred in Islam because it is equivalent to giving someone the gift of life. And our Prophet (PBUH) Himself has said that giving water is the best kind of charity. The Impact of Your Donations
One single hand water pump can benefit up to 25 people and a water well aids around 200 individuals in an entire community.Reliable access to clean water makes possible sustainable futures for entire communities, where children focus of education and adults on making a living instead of worrying and spending time and energy on collecting from miles away. Within a generation, access to clean water can help create circumstances where families can rise out of poverty, improving the state of the Ummah.

As a result of your efforts:
  • Over 200,000 beneficiaries can now use the clean water for drinking, cooking, washing, watering crops, and hydrating their animals.
  • Women and children no longer have to walk miles to fetch water, which means they are able to pursue their education.
  • Sanitation and hygiene improved substantially – people no longer have to rely on dirty and contaminated water to survive and dehydration is significantly reduced
Being the selfless followers of Allah that we are, we are sure you’ll want to help. “Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” – Prophet Muhammad (SAW)

A transformation

Razia and her husband have a family of children. All six of them are among many who are forced to use unhygienic, contaminated water for their daily needs, including direct consumption. The alternate is to walk miles in the heat on unpaved and unsafe tracks to get clean water from far off wells.

This persistent issue negatively affected the health, education and overall wellbeing of Razia’s Family among many others. This changed when your donations created a water pump for them to use instead. A water pump gave them water for life.

“Thank you to everyone who donated towards this hand pump. Every penny given towards this cause will help more people like me to support their families.”

“These hand pumps have introduced a whole new way of living for us, and for this, we cannot thank you enough.”

You changed Razia’s life. This year, you have the opportunity to change so many more.

How we manage your donations

At Ummah, we understand our responsibility doesn’t end with the construction of the well. This is a process and we conduct follow-up checks regularly even after the installation of the water wells and pumps. This is how we work:

  • We receive your donation and carefully select our next location.
  • The completion of a project usually takes between 9 and 12 months.
  • Team UCI supervises the installation of the water hand pump and water wells.
  • We then hold an awareness session based on hygiene practices.
  • The UCI team conducts regular follow-up checks of the installed water pumps and wells.
  • We will send feedback reports to all donors containing photos from the location.

Note: You can donate a handpump or water well in yours or loved one’s name. If no name for a hand pump or water well is given in the ‘notes’ of the donation, we will use the donor name given on the receipt for the plaque.
